As the international community struggles to find diplomatic solutions to conflicts such as those in Syria and Sudan-South Sudan, the United Nations has pressed on with its efforts to provide critical humanitarian support for over 34 million refugees worldwide. In Syria, the numbers are staggering.
To date, over 1 million children have registered as refugees through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). UNHCR, a two-time recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, has made a desperate plea for increased funds for their refugee assistance efforts in Syria, Sudan, and elsewhere. Simply put, it’s time for Iowans to act!
The Iowa United Nations Association, a non-profit organization established in 1953 following an appearance from Eleanor Roosevelt, is hosting the hike alongside Des Moines partners. The hike will begin and end at Grays Lake, stretching nearly 5 miles.
All proceeds benefit USA for UNHCR, which works to assist UNHCR in serving and protecting refugees around the world. We are seeking to help provide family refugee tents, cooking essentials, schooling, and other needs at an assortment of UNHCR camps.
Participants can register online here or on-site (beginning at 3pm) with an entry fee of $10 student, $20 adult. However, individuals are encouraged to attempt to raise $50.
